3-day self-drive itinerary · all-year
*South Iceland hiking adventure: A three-day self-drive tour of Iceland's stunning south coast. Hike through lush green landscapes, past towering waterfalls and glacial rivers. End each day with a soak in one of the region's natural hot springs.*
This 3-day self-drive tour takes you through some of Iceland's most stunning scenery. You'll experience the majesty of the Vatnajökull glacier and get up close and personal with the massive icebergs at Jökulsárlón lagoon. And if that wasn't enough, you'll also go on an unforgettable ice cave tour, exploring the hidden depths of this fantastic natural wonder.
Day 1: Day 1
Keflavík international airport or Reykjavík city to Vík area Start your journey in Iceland's capital city, Reykjavík. If you're arriving by airplane, you'll land at Keflavík international airport, just a short drive from the city center. From here, pick up your rental car and head south towards Vík, your base for exploring the south coast. On the way, you'll pass through some of Iceland's most iconic landscapes. Stop at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the cascade of water as it tumbles down into the valley below. Further along the route, you'll come to the Skógafoss waterfall, one of the tallest in Iceland. Don't miss the chance to hike to the top of the falls for some incredible views. As you near Vík, keep your eyes peeled for the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. These towering pillars of basalt rock are a sight to behold. After checking into your accommodation in Vík, spend the evening exploring the black sand beaches and dramatic coastline.
Day 2: Day 2
Vík area to Skaftafell After breakfast, it's time to explore the Vatnajökull glacier. This massive ice cap covers around 8% of Iceland's surface, making it the largest glacier in Europe. There are a number of ways to experience the glacier, from glacier hikes to ice cave tours. If you're feeling adventurous, why not go for a glacier hike? You'll be kitted out with all the necessary equipment, including crampons and an ice axe, before embarking on a guided hike across the glacier. For a more relaxed experience, opt for a boat tour on the Jökulsárlón lagoon. Here, you'll get up close and personal with some of the huge icebergs that have broken off from the glacier. After a day of exploring, head back to your accommodation in Vík for a well-earned rest.
Day 3: Day 3
Vík area to Keflavík international airport Today is your last day in Iceland. If you're departing from Keflavík international airport, be sure to leave plenty of time to return your rental car and check in for your flight. On the way to the airport, there's one last stop you won't want to miss. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa set in a lava field. Here, you can relax in the milky blue waters and enjoy the stunning views over the lava field. After a final dip in the Blue Lagoon, it's time to say goodbye to Iceland. Until next time!
