The questions we are asked most often about the site and how to use it.
Is Play Iceland free to use?
Yes. Everything on the site is free — the destination guides, the digital journeys, the driving distances, the weather and aurora forecasts. There is no account to create and nothing to pay for.
Do you sell tours or take bookings?
No. Play Iceland is a guide, not a travel agency. We do not sell tours and we cannot take, change or cancel a booking. The self-drive itineraries are free plans you can follow on your own; anything you need to book, you book directly with the operator.
What is a Digital Journey?
A Digital Journey is a guided route through part of Iceland, with narrated audio for each stop along the way. It is designed to be listened to while you drive, so you get the context of a guided tour while travelling at your own pace.
Do I need to book a Digital Journey?
No. Digital Journeys are free and open — press start and go. There is no reservation, no ticket and no time slot.
Where does your weather and aurora data come from?
Weather comes from the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is) and the aurora KP forecast from NOAA. Both are refreshed regularly, but they are forecasts — always check official sources before travelling.
How accurate are the driving distances?
Distances and drive times are computed from OpenStreetMap road data along real routes, not straight lines. They assume normal conditions and do not account for weather, road closures, seasonal restrictions on highland roads, or stops along the way. Treat them as planning estimates.
Can I drive these routes in winter?
Some, but not all. Highland and F-roads close for much of the year, and conditions on open roads change quickly. Check road.is for current conditions and safetravel.is for alerts before you set out.
Something on the site is wrong. How do I report it?
