On this 7-day self-drive tour of West Iceland, you'll get to experience the best that this region has to offer; its culture, history, and experience amazing adventures. You'll start your journey in Reykjavík, then head out into the stunning Icelandic countryside. You'll visit waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal pools, and black sand beaches. By the end of your journey, you'll have seen some of the most beautiful landscapes in Iceland and gained a true understanding of the country's rich culture.
Day 1: Day 1
Welcome to Iceland! Your adventure begins today as you pick up your rental car and start exploring. Your first stop should be the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you can relax in the therapeutic waters and enjoy the stunning views. From there, continue on to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you can see the unique landscapes that Iceland is so famous for. Be sure to stop at the Eldey Island bird sanctuary and the Brimstone Cave before making your way back to Reykjavik for the night.
Day 2: Day 2
Today is all about exploring Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital city. Start your day by visiting the world-renowned Hallgrimskirkja church, then walk down to the harbor to see the statue of Leif Erikson, the first European to discover America. After that, it’s time to explore the city’s many museums, including the National Museum of Iceland and the Icelandic Phallological Museum. In the evening, be sure to enjoy the vibrant nightlife that Reykjavik is known for.
Day 3: Day 3
From Reykjavik, head north to Borgarnes. On the way, you’ll want to make a few stops to see some of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders. First, stop at the Deildartunguhver hot springs, then continue on to see the Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls. After that, it’s time to explore the Reykholt historic site, where you can learn about Iceland’s rich history and culture. Overnight in Borgarnes.
Day 4: Day 4
Today, you’ll explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark. Start your day by visiting the Ytri Tunga beach, where you can see seals basking in the sun. Then, it’s on to Arnarstapi, where you can see the amazing rock formations that this area is known for. In the evening, enjoy the views of the Snæfellsjökull glacier before heading back to your accommodation in Hellnar.
Day 5: Day 5
From Hellnar, make your way to the town of Stykkishólmur. On the way, you’ll want to stop at Djúpalónssandur, where you can see the black lava beaches that this area is famous for. Then, it’s on to see Kirkjufell mountain, one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks. In the evening, enjoy the views of the town and its harbor before heading back to your accommodation for the night.
Day 6: Day 6
From Stykkishólmur, make your way back to Reykjavik, making sure to stop at Búðadalur to see the Grábrók crater. Then, continue on to see the Glanni waterfall before heading back to the city. In the evening, enjoy your last night in Iceland by exploring some of Reykjavik’s many bars and restaurants.
Day 7: Day 7
Your Iceland adventure comes to an end today as you return your rental car and catch your flight home. If you have time before your flight, be sure to explore some of Reykjavik’s many museums and galleries.
