This 7-day Northern lights self-drive tour takes you through some of the most beautiful and secluded parts of Northern Iceland. With a focus on relaxation and wellbeing, this trip is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature. All this while hunting for the northern lights in some of the most stunning locations in Iceland! Start your trip in the picturesque town of Akureyri, nestled amongst stunning mountains and fjords. From here, you will head out into the wilderness on a self-drive tour through some of Iceland’s most remote and beautiful landscapes. Highlights include Lake Myvatn, where you can relax in the natural hot springs, as well as Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. As you journey through these magnificent landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for the northern lights – one of nature’s most spectacular shows. There is no better place to experience this phenomenon than in the secluded and dark skies of Northern Iceland.

Day 1: Day 1

Your adventure starts as soon as you land in Keflavik international airport or in Reykjavik city. You will be driving towards North Iceland where you will be spending the majority of your time. On the way, you will be able to enjoy the stunning scenery that Iceland has to offer. Make sure to make a few stops along the way to take some pictures. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Hvammstangi area.

Day 2: Day 2

After a good night’s rest, you will start your day by visiting the Illugastaðir seal colony. This is a great place to see some of the wildlife that Iceland has to offer. You will then head to the Hvítserkur rock formation, which is a unique rock formation that is definitely worth a visit. After that, you will head to the Kolugljúfur canyon, which is a beautiful canyon that is perfect for a hike. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Akureyri area.

Day 3: Day 3

Today, you will start your day by visiting the Goðafoss waterfall. This is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland and it is definitely worth a visit. After that, you will head to the Mývatn lake, which is a beautiful lake that is perfect for a relaxing day. You will then head to the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, which are unique formations that are definitely worth a visit. After that, you will head to the Dimmuborgir lava field, which is a beautiful lava field that is perfect for a hike. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Mývatn area.

Day 4: Day 4

Today, you will start your day by visiting the Húsavík whale museum, which is a great place to learn about the whales that live in the area. You will then head to the Þeistareikir geothermal area, which is a great place to see some of the geothermal activity that Iceland is famous for. After that, you will head to the Krafla volcano, which is a beautiful volcano that is perfect for a hike. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Mývatn area.

Day 5: Day 5

Today, you will head back to the town of Akureyri and spend the day there. This is a great place to do some shopping and to explore the town. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Akureyri area.

Day 6: Day 6

Today, you will head back to Reykjavik city for your last night. This is a great place to explore the city and to do some shopping. Your accommodation for the night will be in the Reykjavik city area.

Day 7: Day 7

Depending on your flight schedule, a part of this day can be used to explore Reykjavik city or the Reykjanes peninsula. Your Iceland adventure comes to an end as you return your rental car at Keflavik international airport.
