Myvatn Nature Baths: A geothermal soak in North Iceland’s volcanic landscape

Jarðböðin voru formlega tekin í notkun 2004 en fólk hefur líklega baðað sig þarna frá landnámsöld. Sagt var að það væri mikil heilsubót að baða sig þarna sérstaklega ef um er að ræða gigtarsjúklinga skv. baðgestum. Mikið hefur verið byggt upp við Jarðböðin og nú er þar góð aðstaða en Guðmundur biskup góði vígði böðin á sínum tíma. Jarðböðin við Mývatn, commonly known as the Mývatn Nature Baths, is the "Blue Lagoon of the North." Opened in 2004, it offers a more intimate, rugged, and often less crowded alternative to its famous southern counterpart, featuring alkaline waters that are famously beneficial for the skin. The Water and Experience Geothermal Source: The water is drawn from depths of up to 2,500 meters at the nearby Bjarnarflag power station. By the time it reaches the lagoon, it averages a comfortable 36–41°C (97–106°F). Natural Mineral Blend: The water contains a high concentration of sulfur and silicates. While this gives it a faint "volcanic" scent, the minerals are excellent for respiratory issues and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. The "Blue" Effect: Like the Blue Lagoon, the water has a milky, turquoise appearance caused by the way the minerals reflect sunlight. Key Features The Lagoon: Two large pools with varying temperatures and a smaller, hotter tub. The floor is covered in smooth sand and gravel, giving it a natural feel underfoot. Steam Baths: Two steam rooms sit directly over a geothermal fissure. The steam rises through vents in the floor, creating a completely natural, chemical-free sauna experience. Kvika Restaurant: An on-site café where you can try the famous Geysir bread (dark rye bread baked in the ground) served with local smoked trout. The Sunset View: Because the baths face west over the Bárðardalur valley and Lake Mývatn, it is one of the best places in Iceland to watch the sunset or the Northern Lights while soaking.
